Joseph Grimaldi, The Clown
Charles Dickens (Boz)
New York: H. G. Daggers, 1845
An early American edition of Joseph Grimaldi, The Clown, published in New York in 1845 and attributed to Charles Dickens under his celebrated pseudonym, Boz.
Joseph Grimaldi (1778–1837) was one of England's most influential theatrical performers, widely regarded as the father of modern clowning. His colorful career and extraordinary personal life were chronicled in memoirs originally published in London in 1838, edited by Charles Dickens.
This 1845 American edition presents Grimaldi's story in a compact, double-column format typical of inexpensive nineteenth-century literary publications.
The volume is housed in an attractive gray paper covering with a neatly applied printed title label reading:
Joseph Grimaldi, the Clown. By Charles Dickens. New York, 1845.
The covering appears to be a later addition, possibly supplied by a collector or bookseller to protect the original publication. Its restrained presentation complements the book's nineteenth-century character.
A distinctive addition to a collection of early American Dickens editions, Victorian literature, theatrical history, or nineteenth-century popular publishing.
