A scarce late-19th-century paperbound issue of Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens, published as No. 16 in The Cosmopolitan Series and dated August 6, 1889 on the front wrapper. This surviving example has been preserved inside a later custom archival case, giving a fragile ephemeral printing a far more stable and display-friendly life.

The piece carries exactly the sort of age and character collectors of Victorian paper editions hope to find: warm overall toning, edge wear, losses at corners, and the delicacy expected of inexpensive period fiction originally meant to be read rather than saved. The wrapper portrait of Dickens remains especially attractive, and the title page retains the Hurst & Co., Publishers, 122 Nassau Street, New York imprint. A wonderful object for the Dickens collector, the decorative library, or anyone drawn to uncommon 19th-century printed ephemera with genuine presence.

Why We Love It
Victorian paper editions were rarely built to last, which is exactly why surviving examples have such appeal now. This one sits at the intersection of literature, ephemera, and object design: a Dickens title, a clearly dated 1889 wrapper, and a handsome preservation case that lets it be both collected and displayed. The result feels more personal and atmospheric than a standard reprint.

Styling Notes
Beautiful layered on a writing desk, placed on a library table with other brown and black bindings, or displayed open in a study or guest room for a quietly scholarly note. It also works especially well in a stack of antique books where the custom case adds contrast and structure.
